    RESPONSIBLE FOR SPREADING THE BRAKE SHOES APART.  IN AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS THE BRAKE CHAMBER EXPANDS AND THE OPERATING ROD PUSHES ON THE SLACK ADJUSTER WHICH TURNS THE S-CAM SHAFT.
